Short Works: The BBC Radio 4 short story series

How do you write a short story for radio? And once it’s commissioned, how does the production process work?

Short Works is the popular Radio 4 weekly series featuring original and specially commissioned short stories from all over the UK. At this special festival event, Michael Shannon, drama and fiction producer for BBC audio Northern Ireland, talks with two local writers whose short stories were recently commissioned for the programme. Colin Bateman’s Thirteen Toasters story aired in March, and Louise Farr’s The Listener will air in August. They’ll be discussing what makes a good radio story, how to get your story commissioned, how the voice casting and production process works, and offering tips and advice to aspiring short story writers.

Colin and Louise will also read excerpts of their short stories, and there’ll be a chance for audience members to put their questions to the panel. The event will be moderated by writer and Open House PR, Lesley Allen.

Please note this is a festival event and an Open House Festival Ticketsolve login will be required to be book tickets.

Please note this event is theatre seated. If you have any accessibility requirements please get in touch with us here.
