We begin our four-screenings tribute to acclaimed local director John T. Davis with this 1985 documentary.
Endlessly referenced in popular American music, Route 66 is the iconic road that stretches from Chicago to LA. Davis’s film captures this mythic artery at a time when it was steadily being eclipsed by the new interstate highways.
Shot on 16mm, the style is poetic and observational. Interviews with everyday folk are intercut with snatches of local radio and ambient sound. And the extraordinary soundtrack, featuring musicians from the era, greatly contributes to Route 66’s cult status.
