Arguably Woody Allen’s best and funniest movie, this 1977 romcom won four Oscars and four BAFTAs. Comedian Alvy Singer (Allen) tries to understand the demise of his intense relationship with nightclub singer Annie Hall (Diane Keaton).
Heavily autobiographical, the movie is brilliantly inventive with flashbacks to Alvy’s youth, ironic subtitles, surreal fantasies, and killer lines in every scene. At one level it’s a wickedly witty satire of 1970s New York bohemia: on another it’s a tender portrayal of the ups and downs of modern love. Or as Annie would say, “Lah-di-dah, La-di-dah.”
