Part of Late Night Art Bangor
Three years ago, Bangor-born Pam McClean was the first artist to exhibit in The Court House and we’re delighted to welcome her back. Pam graduated from Belfast College of Art in 1971 without even having lifted a paintbrush but forays and creative journeys have seen her move seamlessly from sculpture to landscapes of Donegal and more recent pieces inspired by the landscapes of Co. Down, St. Comgall and even Van Morrison.
“In March of this year I was delighted to be asked to exhibit in the Drawing Room in October. Ahead lay 8 months of creative activity bringing work to completion. It is easy to imagine ideas but another story to fully express those ideas in paint, pastel or pencil.
I have selected a personal favourite painting which depicts ‘Inner Conflict’ to explain the challenge or process it took me to complete it. Reaching for inspiration can be a surprisingly brutal experience. Self doubt often shadows personal judgement, however confidence propels you forward even though the result often disappoints.
I drew two horse heads bound in conflict but could not see a future in it so I hid the large sheet of paper away for 3 or 4 months. Finally I took it out from hiding and began to make sense of the original spontaneous drawing working on the forms and tones with concentration. Slowly I brought its finished state to my satisfaction.”
The painting is called ‘Bitten by Conflict’
