In the week before Halloween, what better than The Exorcist? Released in 1973, the movie created cinematic shockwaves that are still reverberating. The iconic scenes – from the revolving head and flying furniture to the demonic voices and green vomiting – have been imitated ad nauseam. Yet thanks to impeccable casting, storytelling and cinematography, the movie is in a different realm to its countless imitators.
Based on William Peter Blatty’s novel, this is the story of a single mum valiantly trying to protect her daughter from a terrifying affliction. Enter Father Karras and Father Merrin (the exorcist) who do battle with the demonic forces that have possessed young Regan. Director William Friedkin walks the audience up a steadily ascending staircase of terror – a visceral encounter with evil that remains unmatched. So come along and be possessed all over again!
