Set in 1502 during the last days of the Mayan dynasty, Apocalypto tells the story of Jaguar Paw, a young tribesman whose family is captured by bloodthirsty Maya warriors. A timely solar eclipse saves Jaguar from being sacrificed on a giant pyramid. Instead, he is released into the jungle with nine warriors in pursuit – and here must use his superior jungle craft to outrun and outwit his pursuers.
One of the most thrilling chase films ever made, 2006’s Apocalypto scooped numerous awards including three Oscar nominations. Shot in Mexico & Guatemala, it features a local cast who speak throughout in Yucatec-Maya dialect.
Director Mel Gibson may be a controversial figure but there’s no questioning his talent as a movie maker. Actor Robert Duvall called Apocalypto, “maybe the best movie I’ve seen in 25 years,” and Quentin Tarantino declared it “a masterpiece.”
Please note, there are English subtitles throughout and occasional scenes of gore and violence.
