A young couple, Rex and Saskia, are cycling through France when the girl steps into a gas station and vanishes. Then after three years searching for her, the boyfriend is contacted by an unassuming chemist.
Director George Sluizer weaves a Hitchockian web of terror, creating an expertly-layered story that will catch you like a spring-loaded trap.
Focusing on mood and nuance, rather than blood and jump cuts, The Vanishing delivers a greater punch than countless formulaic horror movies. And the ending is one of the greatest in scary movie history.
