This 1936 drama about the Irish War of Independence was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, arguably Northern Ireland’s greatest film director (best known for Scrooge that we screened last Dec). And to introduce and discuss the movie we have his nephew and biographer Allan Smith, together with filmmaker and UTV Life film critic Brian Henry Martin.

Set in 1921, the plot revolves around an Irish Constabulary inspector and a British Military Intelligence captain who are both in love with the sister of an IRA leader – leading to a gripping exploration of divided loyalties and moral choices.

Though it offers a nuanced take on this bloody chapter in Irish history, the film was controversially banned in Northern Ireland when first released. However, it enjoyed extended runs in London and Dublin and established Hurst’s reputation as a director with one critic proclaiming, ‘Hitchcock, Capra, Desmond Hurst.”

Allan will talk about his uncle’s improbable career. From beginning life as the son of an East Belfast shipyard worker, to fighting in Gallipoli with the Royal Irish Battalion, then emigrating to Canada and later hitchhiking to Hollywood where he learned about moviemaking while working under the great John Ford.

Allan and Brian will then discuss the movie and its artistic, historical and cultural significance. After the screening they will hold a brief Q&A session.
