The late great Terence Stamp plays Wilson, a tough London gangster who – having just finished a 9-year prison sentence – travels to LA to investigate the suspicious death of his daughter. On arriving, he finds himself up against a gang of heavy-duty crims (one of whom is convincingly played by Peter Fonda).

They react unkindly to his snooping and Wilson is nearly beaten to death. But being a hard-as-nails Cockney who talks in rhyming slang, Wilson dusts himself down and sets about the turning the tables.

This simple revenge tale is elevated by Steven Soderbergh’s inspired film direction and unorthodox editing. Interestingly, by way of back story, several scenes from Ken Loach’s 1967 debut movie Poor Cow are woven in to show a younger Wilson.

One of the greatest UK actors, Terence Stamp had a unique screen presence that will be sorely missed. In The Limey, he is magnetic as a bereaved dad seeking justice.
